Gases,equilibria And Ammonia Flashcards
How much space does a mole of gas occupy
24dm3 at room temp an atmospheric pressure
How can you calculate the volume of a gas
Mass of gas

Mr gas
What is a reversible reaction
One where the products of the reaction can themselves react to form the original reactants
What happens when you change temperature in a reversible reaction
All reactions are exothermic in one direction and endothermic in the other. If you raise the temperature the endothermic reaction will be favoured to use up extra heat. If you reduce the temperature the exothermic reaction will be favoured to give out more heat
What happens when changing the pressure of a reaction
Many reactions have a greater volume on one side. If you raise the pressure it will favour the reaction which produces less volume, if you decrease the pressure it will favour the side which has more volume
Why have higher temperatures even if it favours the wrong reaction
Lower temperatures means a slower rate of reactions and therefore equilibrium is reached more slowly so a higher temp to compromise an acceptable yeild in an acceptable time
What is ammonia used for
To make nitrogenous fertilisers
What do nitrogenous fertilisers do
They increase plant growth but can cause eutrophication
How to extract ammonia from the Harber process
The ammonia is formed as a gas cool it and remove it as a liquid
