gases and gas laws Flashcards
1
Q
how to convert pressure units?
A
divide by number of the unit you are GIVEN and then multiply by the number of the unit you WANT
2
Q
Boyle’s law
A
the law states that, for a fixed amount of gas at constant temperature, pressure is inversely proportional to volume
PV=k (where k is constant)
P1V1=P2V2
3
Q
Charles’ law
A
for a given amount of gas at constant pressure, volume is directly proportional to the absolute temperature.
V=kT (T is in Kelvin and k is constant)
V1/T1 = V2/T2
4
Q
what are the two common standard conditions?
A
- standard temperature and pressure (STP) -> at 0 degrees Celsius / 273 kelvin and standard pressure = 100.0 kPA
- standard laboratory conditions (SLC) -> 25 deg Celsius, pressure of 100 kPA
5
Q
molar gas volume formula
A
n = V / Vm
Vm is the molar gas formula, 24.8L
6
Q
general gas equation
A
PV = nRT
R represents the universal gas constant, 8.31
P is in kilopascals
T is in KELVIN
