Gases Flashcards
What are the Principles that the kinetic theory of gases is based on?
- Gases consist of molecules except noble gases
- The average distance between molecules in gases is very large compared to the distances of the molecules themselves
- The molecules in a gas move in a rapid, random and straight line motion, colliding with themselves and the edge of any container
- All collisions between gases are perfectly elastic, there is no overall loss in energy
- The average kinetic energy of the molecules increases as the temperature of the gas increases
What does Boyle’s Law state?
Boyle’s law states that a fixed amount of gas maintained at constant temperature is inversely proportionate to the gas pressure.
What does Charles’ Law state?
Charles’ law states that at constant pressure, the volume of a fixed amount of gas is directly proportional to the temperature of that gas.
What does Avagadro’s hypothesis state?
At the same temperature and pressure, equal volumes of different gases contain the same number of molecules.
What is standard temperature and pressure?
273.15K and 100kPa
What does Dalton’s law state?
Dalton’s law states that the pressures of all the individual gases in a mixture of gases adds up to the total pressure of the mixture.
