Gaseous Exchange Flashcards
What are the differences between Breathing, gaseous exchange and cellular respiration?
Breathing is the mechanical process of air moving in and out of the lungs
Gaseous exchange is the exchange of Oxygen and Carbon dioxide across a gaseous surface
Cellular respiration is the gradual release of energy from organic compounds (Glucose) in the presence of Oxygen
What is required for effective gaseous exchange system/surface?
Must be thin= for quick and easy diffusion
Must be moist= in order for diffusion to take place
Must have a transport system= for efficient transport of gasses
Surface must be well protected= it is very thin and fragile
what is the necessity of gaseous exchange?
The main function of the respiratory system is to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere and to make it available for cells to respirate.
Carbon dioxide is released by cells during respiration and must be continually be removed through gaseous exchange.
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration until equilibrium is reached.
