GASEOUS EXCHANGE Flashcards
explain the transport of carbon
Carbon Dioxide from the tissues diffuses into the blood capillaries, they react with water in the blood plasma to form carbonic acid and bicarbonate ions
name the three ways carbon dioxide is transported
bicarbonate ions
blood plasma
carbhaemoglobin
explain the transportation of oxygen
oxygen from the alveolus diffuses most of it combines with haemoglobin of red blood corpuscles to form oxyhaemoglobin
what two ways are oxygen transported to the heart :
oxyhaemoglobin
solution of blood plasma
what is breathing?
the process of obtaining oxygen from the atmosphere and eliminating carbon dioxide from our bodies
why is gaseous exchange necessary?
ensures body of an organism receives oxygen from the air to pass through cells for cellular respiration
why does carbon dioxide need to be eliminated?
accumulated amounts of carbon dioxide becomes toxic to organism
reduces blood pH, thus reducing enzyme action
what are the two stages breathing takes place in?
inhalation and exhalation
what is inhalation?
when rich in oxygen air is drawn to the lungs as a result of the breathing muscles
what is exhalation?
when rich in carbon dioxide air is expelled from the lungs as a result of the breathing muscles
