Gaseous exchange Flashcards
what is gaseous exchange
diffusion of oxygen in the lungs into the blood stream and co2 in the bloodstream and out of the lungs
what is diffusion
exchange of gases from a high concentration to a low concentration
how does oxygen get to the blood stream
- travels through alveoli walls
- into capillaries
- enters blood
- hatches onto hemoglobin
- transported around body to working muscles
where does gaseous exchange happen
in the lungs
what is hemoglobin
oxygen attaches onto it to transport around body
what is the respiratory membrane
wall that keeps oxygen and co2 apart and diffusion occurs across this membrane
what happens during gaseous exchange
oxygen into the bloodstream and removes co2 to the lungs to breathed out
how does co2 get to the lungs
- through capillaries
- released through alveoli
- into lungs
- breathed out of lungs
what happens to gaseous exchange during exercise
need to meet demands of oxygen so causes a steeper gradient of gaseous exchange so it happens quicker
