Q

Explain 3 stage air filter?

A

S1 - Spray eliminator:
Aluminum fins change the direction of airflow to remove water droplets.

S2 - Knitmesh Filter: Removes dirt particles

S3 - Water Seperation: Drains water into a trough, which ensure water tight seal across the bottom of filters. It’s kept at the perfect level by a manometric bend.

Q

Explain Splitter Silencer?

A

Splits air flow stream which will reduce air noise. This is achieved by passing air over aerofoil shaped veins.

Q

Explain cascade bend:

A

Allows air to smoothly change flowing direction by 90° without creating turbulence.

Q

Explain engine intake flare:

A

Seals the intake from the rest of the module and house the “water wash ring.” It is made of glass reinforced plastic.

9
Q

Fully explain how the module ventilation system works.

A

The module ventilation flaps isolate the module if there is an emergency. When the engine is running, the module ventilation flaps are to be open to allow for airflow to cool the module and push out exhaust fumes.
The module is ventilated by: Bernoullis theory, the Venturi effect & Vent by Volute (VxV)

Q

How are compressors driven?

A

When combustion takes place in the combustion cans, a portion of the air in the CC becomes the “Working Fluid.” This working fluid is used to drive the compressors.

11
Q

What is the purpose of the power Turbine?

A

The power turbine uses 2/3 of the energy from the working fluid to drive the shaft connected to either a gearbox or a generator.

12
Q

What are Mag Chips? Where are they fitted and how often are they checked?

A

Mag Chips are fitted for early failure detection. They are found in the oil return (scavenge leg) and collect ferrous debris. They are checked every 24 hours.

15
Q

Explains Partial overspeed trip.

A

If the rotation of the propeller changes, for instance, if it comes out of the water, this will reduce this amount of fuel to the engine to prevent the prop over speeding.

16
Q

Explain PT Overspeed.

A

If the power turbine begins turning at more than 110% of its maximum speed, this will kill the engine.

17
Q

Hazard of Gas Turbines?

A

Fires, Noise, Ingniter hold exceptionally high voltages.

18
Q

Precautions when working with igniters?

A

Must be isolated for at least 5 mins to allow charge to dissipate.

19
Q

What fire system is fitted to gas Turbine module?

A

BCF or BCM

20
Q

What checks are performed hourly on a running gas turbine?

A

Pressure and temperatures.
Oil levels.
Any unusual noises or vibrations.
Any leaks.

21
Q

Explain a wet motor cycle.

A

The engine is spun over using the starter motor. Fuel is ON, but igniters are isolated, and fuses are removed. Done from LCP ONLY.

22
Q

Explain Dry Motor cycle.

A

The engine is spun over using the starter motor. The fuel is OFF, igniters and fuses are isolated. Done at LCP ONLY.

23
Q

Explain water washing.

A

Carried out to prevent debris and building up and fouling the compressor blades. Distilled water and compressor cleaning fluid (CCF) are sprayed into the intake flare when carrying out a dry motor cycle, to do so.

24
Q

How do we inhibit the corrosion of gas turbine parts?

A

By using PX24 (Preservative).
