Fuel ⛽️ Flashcards
State 4 methods of embarking fuel when alongside?
RAS, Barge, Jetty Storage Tanks Direct Jetty Pipeline.
What is the flow from a tanker to the service tank during RAS?
Tanker, Filling Trunk, Manifold, Displaced Tank Centrifuge, Un-Displaced Tanks, Transfer Pumps, Service Tank, Boost Pump, Engine/Ringmain.
Why are fuel tanks positioned at the lowest part of the ships?
To improve stability.
What is the purpose of the fuel tank filling valves?
Isolate the tank from the manifold.
How does the centrifuge separate fuel from water?
It spins, and centrifugal force throws the two substances of different weights. The heavier water gets thrown outwards, and the fuel is thrown upwards.
What percentage are undisplaced tanks filled to?
95%
What is the purpose of the coalescer and to what level?
A device that removes water droplets from fuel, down to 10ppm.
Purpose of fuel pre filters and to what level?
Remove fine dirt particles down to 5 microns from fuel.
What material may filters be made from?
Paper, cloth, sponge, etc.
How is the ready to use (emergency) tanks level maintained?
Through the supply (boost) ringmain.
What is MBG and where is it found?
Microbiological growth. Found in virtually all fuels and under the right conditions will grow to clog valves.
State 4 fuel tests?
Visual Test.
Water reaction test.
Color test.
Diesel filtration test.
Hazards associated with fuel?
Fire and explosion.
Toxicity.
Dermatitis.
Pollution.
