Gas Tests Flashcards
How to test for hydrogen:
Do a reaction, trap the gas and put a lit splint as the base of the test tube
Example chemical reaction for hydrogen:
Hydrochloride acid and magnesium
Positive result for hydrogen:
The lit splint goes out with a pop
How to test for oxygen:
Do a chemical reaction and trap the gas. Light a splint and blow it out, then put it in the test tube.
Positive result for oxygen:
The blown out splint relights
Positive result for CO2:
The lit splint goes out
How to test for CO2:
- Bubble the gas through limewater
2. Do a reaction, trap the gas and put a lit splint at the base of the test tube
Positive result for chlorine:
The blue litmus paper goes pink then white
How to test for chlorine:
Do a reaction, trap the gas and put a piece of blue litmus paper at the base of the test tube.
