Gas Exchange and Transport Flashcards
What are the major differences between external and internal respirations
During external respiration, oxygen will diffuse from the alveoli into the pulmonary capillaries.
Internal respiration oxygen will diffuse from the systemic capillaries into the tissue
How are gases transported around the body
Oxygen - Plasma and Hb
Cardon Dioxide- Plasma, Carried by Hb inside RBC as Carbaminohemoglobin, bicarbonate ions
Define Hypoxia
to little oxygen in the blood
Define Hypercapnia
increased concentrations of carbon dioxide
Define Haemoglobin
a red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood
Define Chemoreceptor
a sensory cell or organ responsive to chemical stimuli
How do exercise and ageing affect the respiratory system
Vital Capacity, Blood O2 Level, Alveolar macrophage activity, Ciliary action of Respiratory epithelia
