Gas exchange Flashcards
Respiration definition
Respiration is a chemical reaction taking place in every cell where glucose is broken down to release energy.
Ventilation definition
Ventilation is the mechanism that moves air into and out of lungs allowing gas exchange to take place.
What is the function of the nasal cavity in the breathing system
Air is warmed and filtered as it enters the body.
What is the function of the trachea in the breathing system?
Breathing tube from throat. Brings air into the lungs. Supported by C shaped rings of cartilage that prevent it collapsing.
What is the function of the bronchus in the breathing system?
Branches off the trachea to bring air into the lungs. Also supported by rings of cartilage.
What is the function of the bronchiole in the breathing system?
Branch off the bronchi that carry air to alveoli.
What is the function of the alveoli in the breathing system?
Small air sacs that are the site of gas exchange.
What is the function of the lung in the breathing system?
Organ where gas exchange occurs.
What is the function of the ribs in the breathing system?
Protects the internal organs of the thorax.
What is the thorax?
Part of the body between the neck and abdomen.
What is the function of the intercoastal muscles in the breathing system?
Muscles between the ribs that aid breathing.
What is the diaphragm and how is it relevant to the breathing system?
Sheet of muscle below the ribs that aids breathing. Separates thorax from abdomen.
What are the pleural membranes and how are they relevant to the breathing system?
Thin layers that reduce friction between the lungs and the inside of the chest wall during breathing.
What is pleural fluid and how does it aid breathing?
Fluid found in the pleural cavity (between the pleural membrane layers). It further reduces friction during breathing.
