Gas Exchange Flashcards
Why does respiration take place in body cells?
In order to supply the cells with energy.
During respiration, what is used up and produced?
The body cells use up oxygen and produce carbon dioxide and water
How do CO2 and water pass out of the body?
By diffusion.
This happens because the cytoplasm has a higher concentration of CO2 and water than the blood plasma.
How does CO2 and water diffuse in the lungs?
In the lungs, CO2 and water diffuse from the blood plasma into the alveoli (from high to low concentration)
How does oxygen diffuse into the body cells?
It passes from the alveoli into the blood and then it passes from the blood into the body cells.
It is diffusing from a higher to a lower concentration.
How is oxygen mainly transported?
It is mainly transported by combining with the red pigment haemoglobin, to form oxyhaemoglobin. Only about 3% of oxygen is carried dissolved in plasma.
How are CO2 and water tranported?
CO2 and water are both carried in blood plasma?
