Gamete Production And Fertilisation Flashcards
What produces sperm in the testes?
The seminiferous tubules
What produces testosterone in the testes?
Interstitial cells
What is the role of the prostate gland and seminal vesicles?
The prostate gland and seminal vesicles secrete fluids that maintain the mobility and viability of the sperm
How does testosterone enter the bloodstream?
Testosterone passes directly into the bloodstream from the interstitial cells
Where are interstitial cells that produce testosterone located?
In the tissue around the seminiferous tubules.
What hormone is produced in the interstitial cells of the testes
Testosterone
What glands does testosterone activate to produce?
Testosterone activates the prostate gland and seminal vesicles to secrete fluids in order the maintain the mobility and viability of sperm
Where are ova found?
In the ovaries
What is found within the ovaries?
Immature ova in various stages of development
What is each ovum surrounded by?
A follicle that protects the developing ovum and secretes hormones
What is the role of the follicle?
The follicle protects the developing ovum and secretes hormones such as oestrogen
What occurs in fertilisation?
Mature ova are released into the oviduct where they may be fertilised by sperm to form a zygote
Where does the blastocyst implant itself?
The blastocyst implants itself in the endometrium of the uterus
What does the zygote become after repeated cell division?
The zygote divides repeatedly to from a ball of cells known as the blastocyst
What can happen to the mature ova in the oviduct?
The mature ova can fuse with sperm to form a zygote
