Gall bladder anatomy Flashcards
What is the purpose of the gall bladder?
Stores bile. Bile is concentrated and released from gallbladder in response to eating
Where is the gall bladder?
Peritoneal
High in the abdomen, in right hypochondriac region
Lies in fossa between right and quadrate lobes of inferior liver
Name the 3 parts of the gall bladder?
Fundus
Body
Neck
Infundibulum
What does the gall bladder look like? What is its storage capacity?
Pear shaped sac, can hold approx. 30-50ml of liquid
Arterial supply to gall bladder?
Cystic artery
Derived from hepatic artery proper, a branch of common hepatic
Communicates with liver also
Venous drainage of gall bladder?
No vein! Drains into liver
Innervation of gall bladder?
Coeliac plexus: sensory and sympathetic
Vagus: Parasympathetic
What effect do parasympathetic nerves have on the gall bladder?
Contraction of gall bladder and secretion of bile into cystic duct
Lymph drainage of gall bladder?
Cystic node, at gallbladder neck.
This then empties into the hepatic lymph node, and ultimately to the celiac node.
Name the layers of the gallbladder wall from outside>in.
- Serosa
- Perimuscular layer - connective tissue that covers muscular layer
- Muscular layer - smooth muscle
- Mucosa - layer of epithelial cells and lamina propria (loose connective tissue)
What is the name of the vessel where the cystic and hepatic ducts meet?
The common bile duct
What is bile’s main function?
Help the body digest fats
What is bile made of?
Bile salts
Pigments - bilirubin
Cholesterol
Water
Describe bile’s journey from liver to duodenum
Produced in liver
Flows down hepatic duct
If not needed for digestion goes into gall bladder via cystic duct for storage
Gall bladder absorbs water in it making it more concentrated
When needed it flows into common bile duct
Goes into duodenum via major papilla
