Gait Cycle Flashcards
Loading Response
Shock absorption
Begin weight bearing
continue progression of forward movement
Initial Contact
establish contact with leading foot, begin STANCE
Mid Stance
Limb and Trunk Stability
Progression over stationary foot
Terminal Stance
Progression past stationary foot
Prepare for swing
Pre Swing
Weight release from stationary foot
Position limb for swing
Initial Swing
Prepare foot for clearance
advance foot from trailing position
Mid-Swing
foot clearance
limb advancement
Terminal swing
Prepare for stance
Complete limb advancement
Requirements of Gait Cycle (5)
Stability in Stance Foot Clearance in swing Preposition for initial contact Adequate Step Length Energy conservation
Pelvic List
in early stance, hip on non weight-bearing foot drops about 2”
antalgic (painful) gait
adopted limp to avoid pain on weight bearing structures
very short stance phase on affected side
Arthrogenic Gait
stiffness in affected joints from deformity/decreased joint space
plantar flexion of foot opposite to affected side to incr clearance
affected leg circumducted
step usually shorter
Ataxic Gait
unsteady, uncoordinated gaitn need broad base of support loss of sensation or control may lurch or staggar pt often watches feet when walking
Parkinsonian Gait
small shuffling steps
hypokinesia (general slowness of movement)
reduced stride length and walking speed, while cadence is increased
Steppage (foot drop) Gait
full foot drop
hip raised very high to clear toe
hemiplegic gait
Leg is stiff without flexion at knee and ankle, and with step is rotated away from the body, then towards it forming a semi circle
