Gait Analysis Flashcards
What is Gait Analysis?
Sytematic study of locomotion
Augmented by instrumentation
To measure body movement, mechanics and activity of muscles
What Constitutes Gait?
Pattern of movement of limbs during locomotion
Can be walking jogging or running
What is the objective of gait?
Perform repetitive sequence of limb motions Move body forwards Maintain stability conserve energy Absorb impact shock
What is the definition of gait cycle?
Time from one event (usually initial contact) of one foot to the same event of same foot
Single sequence of events with one limb
What are the sections of the gait cycle?
Stance phase (60%) Swing Phase (40%)
How are the stance and swing phases broken down further?
STANCE PHASE- Double limb stance; single limb stance; Double limb Stance
SWING PHASE- initial swing; mid-swing; terminal swing
What is cadence?
Steps within given time (minute)
Unit= Steps/minute
What is the Equation for Cycle/Stride time?
Cycle Time (s)= 120/ cadence
What is the equation for gait speed?
Speed (m/s)= stride length (m) x cadence (steps/min)/ 120
what is an alternate way to break down the stance and swing phase?
STANCE PHASE- heel strike; foot flat; mid stance; heel off; toe off
SWING PHASE- acceleration; mid swing; deceleration
