Gait Flashcards
Antalgic gait - cause, observation
Cause - pain
Observation - less time spend on painful leg
Gait types
DAFT CHAP
- Diplegic
- Ataxic
- Footdrop
- Trendelenburg
- Choreiform
- Hemiplegic
- Antalgic
- Parkinsonian
Ataxic gait - cause, observation
Cause - cerebellum injury or sensory deficit
Observation - unsteady trunk, broad base
Exacerbate with heel-toe walking
Choreiform gait - cause, observation
Cause - HD, Sydenham’s chorea (in RF)
Observation - jerky, involuntary movements of all extremities
Diplegic gait - cause, observation
Cause - cerebral palsy
Observation - bilateral spasticity in all extremities, very narrow base, adduction of knees, dragging of both legs and scraping of toes
Drop foot - cause, observation
Cause - dorsiflexor weakness/damaged peroneal nerve
Observation - forefoot cannot be raised, high stepping gait to clear toes. Foot may slap the ground
Trendelenburg gait - cause, observation
Cause - weakness of gluteus medius
Observation - lurching toward affected hip
Hemiplegic gait - cause, observation
Cause - stroke
Observation - unilateral weakness, leg in extension and foot plantarflexed. Weak leg circumducts due to foot drop
Parkinsonian/festinating gait - cause, observation
Cause - PD, other basal ganglia disease
Observation - bradykinesia, tremor, rigidity, small shuffling steps with difficulty initiating. Difficulty with stopping as well, tendency to accelerate (festinating)
