G1B Living World:Rainforest Flashcards
Why is soil infertile in the rainforest and how have plants adapted to this
It is infertile due to lots of rain. This process called leeching removes essential minerals for plants. Most nutrients are on the surface decomposing. So trees have adapted to have wide shallow roots that have a large surface area.
Layers of the rainforest
Emergent-Tallest/Trees have wide roots
Canopy-Most animals live here
Understorey-Woody plants and shrubs
Ground layer-3% of light
Definition
Producers
Consumers
Producers-organisms that can make their own food
Consumers- Must consume other organisms to gain energy
3 plant adaptations
Buttress roots- large above ground roots at the bases of large tropical trees.
Leaf structure-Wide leafs absorb lots of water and a drip tip is a tapered end so that water can slide off so plants dont rot
Ephiyptes- They live on the surface of other plants taking nutrients. And have adapted to growing up on high trees so that they can absorb the most sunlight.
3 animal adaptations
Camoflauge-many animals are camoflauge to hide from prey and predators
Poison/Venom-Many animals develop a poison or venom to use against predators
Physical Characterstics-Such as longer limbs for climbing or claws to climb
