What is the role of advisory council on misuse of drugs ?
Advice the government of which medicines should be CD . Also what will work in practice and what punishments should be given if misuse of drugs act is broken
What is the most dangerous Class of drugs and give an example? (in terms of the misuse of drugs act 1971)
Class A: Heroin, LSD, crack cocaine
Class B: Weed, codiene, anphetamine
Class C: anabolic steroids, benzodiazapines
Class A has the most severe punishment.
What is the misuse of drug regulation 2001? What factors are they classified on?
Rules applied to drugs for their legit use.
Extent of use in medicine
Need to prevent misuse
What are the different levels of control in the misuse of drugs regulation ?
5 schedules
Schedule 1 = CD Lic
Schedule 2 = CD POM
Schedule 3 = CD NO register POM
Schedule 4 (part 1) = CD Benz POM (part 2) = CD Anab POM
Schedule 5 = CD Inv P or CD inv POM
What is the most tightly/strictly controlled schedule and what drugs are included?
Schedule 1
Includes drugs such hallucinogenics, raw opium and cannabis in its whole.
Usually drugs that have no to little clinical/ therapeutic use use
Can you use schedule 1 drugs for research?
No unless you have a licence from the home secretary in order to posses, produce or supply these drugs in schedule 1
What drugs are included in schedule 2?
Includes opiates, major stimulants (e.g. amfetamines), quinalbarbitone.
What are the full controls relating to schedule 2 drugs ?
- Prescription requirements
- Safe custody
- Record keeping (always make a record in CD)
What is required if pharmacists wanted to supply or export schedule 2 drugs outside of the UK ?
A licence is required for the import and export
What drugs fall into schedule 3?
Barabiturates, buprenophine, temazepam, gabapentin and pregablin
What are the full controls relating to schedule 3 drugs?
- Prescription requirements
- Safe custody- Numerous exemptions
- CD register entries NOT required
- Invoice retained for 2 years
- Licences required for import ad export
For schedule 4 drugs, do you need safe custody, prescription or record keeping ?
No, but you do need import and export licence unless its for personal use
What drugs are included in schedule 4 part one ?
CD benz e.g benzodiazepines, sativex (cannabis extract)
