CN I - Olfactory (sensory)
smell
CN II - Optic (sensory)
vision
CN III - Oculomotor (motor)
- Raise eyelid (levator palpebrae)
- Moves the eye up, down, and ADDucts (superior rectus, medial rectus, inferior rectus, & inferior oblique).
CN IV - Trochlear (motor)
Moves eye down and ABducts
- controls superior oblique

CN V - Trigeminal (both)
Three Branches:
- opthalmic (v1) of CN V
- Maxillary (v2) of CN V
- Mandibular (v3) of CN V
(Sensory) - touch, temp. positions head. - proprioception for muscles of mastication (Motor) - Chewing, opens jaw, moves soft palate.
CN VI - ABducens (motor)
ABducts eye (controls lateral rectus)
- SO4(LR6)
CN VII - Facial (both) - 6 Branches 1. Temoral 2. Zygomatic 3. Buccal 4. Mandibular 5. Cervical 6. Posterior auricular
- moves facial muscles, lacrimal and nasal gland secretions, submandibular and sublingual glands, tympanic membrane, external ear canal sensations and taste on anterior ⅔ of tongue.
Motor components
- Temporal branch: frontalis and orbicularis oculi
- Zygomatic branch: orbicularis oculi, zygomaticus major and minor
- Buccal branch: buccinator, orbicularis oris, zygomaticus, levator labii superioris
- Mandibular branch: orbicularis oris and depressor labii inferioris
- Cervical branch: platysma
- Posterior auricular- occipitalis
CN VIII - Vestibulocochlear (sensory)
hearing and balance
CN IX - Glossopharyngeal (both)
-elevates pharynx during swallowing, secretion of parotid gland, senses arterial oxygen and blood pressure,
Touch: posterior ⅓ tongue, palate, middle ear, inner surface of ear drum,
Taste: posterior ⅓ tongue
CN X - Vagus (both)
- Speaking and swallowing
- visceral smooth muscle activity
- slow heart rate and sensory feedback from visceral organs,
- touch pain temp from larynx pharynx auditory canal and tympanic membrane, -
taste from epiglottis
CN XI - Spinal Accessory (motor)
Movement of neck and shoulders & speech
CN XII - Hypoglossal (motor)
