Will
(known as the predictive future)
Modal verb
Expresses: voluntary actions, predictions, promises, offers, spontaneous decisions.
Example: ‘‘I will go home tomorrow.’’
Going to (”Near Future”)
Planned, intended actions, prior intentions.
Present Continuous:
- planned or arranged future actions or events.
Example: ‘‘They are meeting at 5 PM tomorrow.’’
Present Simple:
Expresses scheduled events, timetables, and fixed future arrangements.
Example: “The train leaves at 8 AM tomorrow.”
Future with ‘‘shall’’
Modal verb. Mostly used in formal or British English to express offers, suggestions, or intentions. Shall is only used for future time reference with I and we, and is more formal than will.
Example: ‘‘Shall I help you with your bags?’’
Modal verbs (can, may, might):
Expresses possibility, permission, or uncertainty about future actions or events. Example: ‘‘I may visit my grandparents next month.’’
Adverbs:
Adverbs such as soon, tomorrow, next week, in the future, etc., can be used to indicate futurity.
Example: ‘‘I will finish the report soon.’’
Future Continuous
Future activity/ state that will begin before and will continue after a certain moment in future: ”This time timorrow we shall/will be watching TV”.
An activity/state will extend over a whole future period: ”Lucy will be writing letters all day long”.
Future Perfect Simple (Shall/Will + Have + Past Participle)
An action which will be finished before a certain moment or another acction in the future: ”It is 9 o’clock. I am sure my sister will have written her composition by 11 o’clock”).
Duration up to a certain time in the future: “Tomorrow we shall have been on holiday for one motnh”).
Future Perfect Continuous (shall/will + Have + Been + Present Participle).
the duration of an action up to a certain moment in the future: “At 6 o’clock your sister will have been sleeping for two hours”.
The Future-in-the-Past Simple (Should/Would + Short Infinitive)
a future action/state seen from a viewpoint in the past: “She told me that she would go there soon”.
Present Perfect
future action that will take place before another future action: “The children will play in the garden after they have finished their homework”.
Past Tense
future action simultaneous with another action expressed by a Future-in-the-Past: “I was sure they would like this book when they understood it”.
Past Perfect
future action that will take place before another action expressed by a Future-in-the-Past: “My friend explained to his parents that he would go on a trip abroad after he had passed his exams”.
