further training methods Flashcards
What are some examples of continuous training?
- running / jogging
- cycling
- swimming
- exercise sessions (such as aerobics)
What are the most popular ways of carrying out continuous training?
Through using a specific machine such as a treadmill, exercise bike, or cross trainer
Why is continuous training a good form of all round exercise and very popular for many games players?
Because the “specialist” machines are widely available in gyms and leisure centres
What is interval training?
This is training that has periods of work and periods of rest, with variations of the two. When working, the heart rate needs to be at a high training zone level; while during rest it should drop down into the aerobic zone
What are the two most common forms of interval training?
- long interval training
* short interval training
What happens in long interval training?
- work periods of between 15 seconds and 3 minutes
- at about 80-85% of maximum levels
- includes corresponding rest periods for recovery
Who is long interval training a good method for?
- games players (football, rugby)
* middle distance athletes
What happens in short interval training?
- short periods of work, no more than 15 seconds
- work happens at maximum levels
- includes realistic recovery time, possibly up to 2 minutes
Who is short interval training a good method for?
- racket sports players (tennis, squash)
* sprinters
What is fartlek training?
It is a Swedish form of interval training
What are some examples of fartlek training?
- walking
- brisk walking
- jogging
- fast steady running
What is the continuous shuttle run?
This is the ‘multi stage fitness test’ and is also commonly known as the ‘bleep test’. Although it was primarily designed to be a test, it has quickly been adopted as a training method as well
What is the continuous shuttle run training method a form of?
Continuous training
What happens in the continuous shuttle run?
There are a series of 20 meter shuttle runs, which have to be carried out in time with an electronic bleep that speeds up every minute
What is altitude training?
This is where some sort of aerobic exercise is carried out at higher altitude, where the air is less dense and oxygen levels are low with less pressure of oxygen
