  • There shall be work and security - trade unions allowed
  • Education shall be free

Treason Trial - 1956

A
  • Government arrested and charged 156 with high treason, including most of the leaders of the ANC
  • Government lawyers tried to prove that the freedom charter was communist and that the accused were plotting violent revolution
  • All accused were eventually released and opposition weakened due to the longevity of the case

Female opposition to apartheid

A
  • 1955 - Anti-pass law demonstrations announced that black women would have to carry pass books and there were huge protests with men and women, one of them being Walter Sisulu’s wife
  • Black Sash Organisation - A group of white women founded this in 1955 to git the National Party’s end to end Coloured voting rights
  • Winnie Mandela, Nelson’s second wife kept the flag of restiacen flying high

  • African National Congress - aimed to abolish apartheid and equal rights for all, more dominant
  • Pan Africanist Congress (split from ANC) - Militant resistance and focused on the freedom of blacks
