Further Mechanics Flashcards
What is Angular Displacement measured in?
radians (rad)
Angular Displacement refers to the angle turned through in circular motion.
What is Angular Velocity?
Rate of change of angular displacement, measured in radians per second
Angular Velocity is distinct from angular speed as it includes direction (clockwise or anticlockwise).
What is Centripetal Acceleration?
The acceleration needed to change the velocity of a body in circular motion
It arises because the direction of the body’s velocity is continuously changing as it follows an orbit.
What does Centripetal Force act towards?
The centre of an object’s orbit
This force is responsible for maintaining circular motion.
What does the Conservation of Momentum state?
In a closed system with no external forces, the momentum before an event equals the momentum after the event
This principle is foundational in physics for analyzing collisions and interactions.
What characterises an Elastic Collision?
The kinetic energy of a system before an event equals the kinetic energy after the event
In elastic collisions, both momentum and kinetic energy are conserved.
Define Impulse.
The change of momentum of an object when a force acts on it.
Impulse is also represented as the area underneath a force-time graph.
What is an Inelastic Collision?
When the kinetic energy of a system before an event is not equal to the kinetic energy after the event
In inelastic collisions, kinetic energy is transformed into other forms of energy.
What is Force equal to?
rate of change of momentum
What is the conservation of energy?
energy cannot be created nor destroyed, only transferred from one store to another.
1 electronvolt =
energy gained by a particle with charge e when accelerated through a PD of 1 volt.
What is meant by weightlessness?
When the Normal Reaction force = zero and the object is brielfy in ‘free fall’
