Cabriole
A sofa w a curved back that looks like a camel hump. Characterized by straight lines and a long individual cushion for the seat. An invention by Thomas Chippendale.
Camel Back
Dating from the 18th century, a deep buttoned or tufted sofa with arms and back of the same height, usually made of leather. The seat cushions are fixed. In the UK, this refers to any sofa with buttons and quilting.
Chesterfield
A sofa that features scrolled arms with a curved back that is higher than the arms. The legs are visible.
English or Club Sofa.
Characterized by its back with one raised end. Dates from the 19th century and was usually used by women.
Fainting sofa
A type of sofa that folds down into a bed.
Futon
Based on an early mid 17th century sofa, made for a house in Kent (England). This sofa has a straight high back and angled arms that can be adjusted to open out or stand up straight. The back and arms traditionally connect with finials wrapped in cords.
Knole
A sofa with a low, squarish back, with arms that are even lower than the back. It’s arms can be square or rolled.
Lawson
A sofa that has arms of the same height as the back. Earlier versions had arms curving outward. The back maybe feature one, two or three cushions. It’s name comes from a park in New York.

Mid century modern
This modular seating is configure from components of armless sofas and end/ corner units, ottomans and sometimes recliners.
