Fungi Test Flashcards
What are fungi?
Consumers- they can’t make their own food, but steal from organisms they live near.
What are the six fungi characteristics?
- They can’t move
- Multicellular
- Eukaryotic
- Reproduce with spores
- Get nutrients from decaying organisms
- Thrive in warm and humid areas
What are 12 examples of fungi?
- Mushrooms
- Mold
- Mildew
- Puffballs
- Shelf fungus
- Morel
- Ringworm
- Athlete’s foot
- Yeast
- Corn smut
- Wheat rust
- Truffles
How do fungus reproduce?
With spores
Why are fungi saprophytes?
They feed on dead and decaying organisms.
Instead of roots, what do fungus have?
Hyphae
What are hyphae?
Fibers of fungus that decompose and absorb nutrients
What is mycorrhizae?
Networks of hyphae and roots that results in the plants getting more food and the fungi getting sugars.
What are lichens?
They are part fungus and part green algae/ blue-green bacteria
How does it help lichen to be both fungi and algae/bacteria?
THe fungus part gets food while the algae/bacteria get a moist home
What two animals eat lichens?
Caribou and musk oxen
What do lichen help with? (2 things)
Help to weather rocks and can be biological indicators
What are biological indicators?
Organisms that are extra sensitive (lichens can tell about air quality)
