Fungi Flashcards
What is fungi
Reproduce by spores
They are heterotrophic
Have cell walls made of chitin
They often consist of hyphae forming mycelium
“Sterile means the absence of all living things”
“Asepsis means that precautions are taken to prevent unwanted microorganisms contaminating the activity”
What are fungi
Parasites of plants ( mildews, soft rots ) and animals (athletes foot )
Saprophytes that cause decay
What are edible fungi
Mushrooms and and truffles are hard to distinguish from poisonous fungi (Deathcap)
What is rhizopus and how does it reproduce
Rhizopus is a saprophyte
It has tubes called hyphae( forming visible mycelium)
Reproduces asexually by spores
“Sporulation is the process of making spores”
Reproduces sexually when nuclei from different mycelia fuse to form zygospores. These remain dormant until conditions are suitable for growth
When + and - strains grow close together swelling form opposite each other
These swelling tough and nuclei move in and out forming progametania
Walls between the gametangia dissolve
Firtillisations produce a number of diploid zygote nuclei
Zygospores forms around the nuclei
Zygospores remains dormant k
Describe yeast
Single celled fungus
Reproduces sexually by budding
Repaired anerobically to form ethanol and co2
What precautions are taken when Working with fungi
Use anti septic techniques to exclude unwanted microorganisms
Sterilize the work area
Dispose of material safely
EXPERIMENT- Test the presence to starch
Cut some leaves from a plant like ash
Wash hands
Disinfect surface of bench
Place blob of Vaseline on upper surface of leaves. Leaves can be cu into small sections to fit into the Petri dish
Place tips of a forceps in a Bunsen flame
Barely open a
Economic benefits and disadvantages of fungi
Yeasts produce alcohol
Mushrooms are edible
Disadvantages: - They destroy food
- causes human animal and plant diseases (athletes foot )
