Blood Flashcards
What’s plasma
The liquid part of the blood
Transports foods, salts, hormones , waste and heat
What’s plasma
The liquid part of the blood
Transports foods, salts, hormones , waste and heat
What is serum
Is plasma without the clotting proteins
Describe red blood cells
They are made in bone Marrow
Contain haemoglobin
Carry oxygen
What are the dead red blood cells
Dead red blood cells are broken down in the liver and spleen
Describe haemoglobin
Is broken down to form bile
Gains oxygen in the lungs , forming oxyhaemoglobin
Describe white blood cells
Have no definite shape
Are bigger than red cells but less numerous
Defend the body against infection
Describe platelets
Are cell fragments
Are formed in the bone marrow
Help clog the blood
What are the main functions of blood
Transport
Body defence
What are the human blood groups
O, A , B , AB
Blood groups can be rhesus positive or rhesus negative
How are red blood cells different from normal cells
They have no nuclei
No mitochondria
A biconcave shape
What is oxyhaemoglobin
It looses oxygen to body cells forming haemoglobin
What are lymphocytes and monocytes
Lymphocytes:
25% of white blood cells
Made in the bone marrow
Found in the lymphatic system and make antibodies
Monocytes:
5% of white blood cells
Made in the bone marrow
Engulf bacteria
