Fungi Flashcards
What is the study of fungi called?
Mycology
What are plant-like characteristics of Fungi
-Eukaryotic
-Have a cell wall
-Reproduce asexually and sexually
-Most are multicellular (yeast is not)
What are non plant-like characteristics of Fungi
-Heterotrophic, don’t photosynthesize
-Cell walls are made of chitin, not cellulose
What is the hidden base of fungi called
Mycelium
What is mycelium made up of
Thin white threads called hyphae
What are rhizoids?
A form of hyphae that acts like roots. Penetrates the surface of host and secretes digestive enzymes and absorbs nutrients
Fungi are heterotrophic, what does that mean?
Must obtain nutrients from other organisms
Define saprophytic
Something that feeds off of decaying material like leaves or rotting wood
Define parasitic
Organism that feeds off of a living host organism
What are haustoria hyphae
Specialized hyphae used by parasitic fungi to penetrate into the host cell
What are mutualistic fungi?
Fungi that lives symbiotically with another organism (work together)
What are the three ways fungi can asexually reproduce?
- Fragmentation
- Budding
- Spores
