Fungi Flashcards
How can you tell apart a mould from a yeast’s hyphae
Moulds will have multiple nuclei, Whereas a yeast will only contain a single nucleus
What is unique about a fungi’s nucleus compared to a bacteria?
Nucleus is more similar to a eukaryotes, With membranes and pores being present
How do moulds grow?
They typically extend from the tips only becoming longer
What are the two replication methods yeasts use?
Budding
Binary fission
What are the three types of sexual reproduction structures yeasts can perform?
- Zygomycota
- Ascomycota
- Basidiomycota
What is Zygomycota
No seperation of the cell, Leading to either asexual spore release or sexual production
What are Ascomycotas?
Asco’s are produced, which results in production of conidia
What are asco’s?
Sacks of spores
What are Basidiomycota
Seperate hyphae which sexually reproduce through basidium
How do the Mycorrhizia assist plants?
They wrap around the roots, assisting with water absortption and nutrient uptake
What moulds are most commonly linked to food spoilage?
Aspergillus and penicillum
Where do moulds grow within liquids?
On the surface due to them being obligate aerobies
Where to fungi grow within liquids?
Lower down due to them being faculative anaerobes
What causes Ergotism and where is it typically found?
Claviceps purpria found on wheat
What are the symptoms of ergotism
Fits, Insanity, feeling of burning
