Definitions – mycelium, hyphae, fruiting body
mycelium - help the fungus absorb nutrients.
hyphae - multicellular thread like filament makes up the basic structure of fungus.
fruiting body - spore producing reproductive structure in fungi.
4 types of fungal nutrition
parasitic:
Absorb nutrients from living cells of host organism
predatory:
Mycelia able to trap prey
mutualistic:
Form beneficial partnerships with other organisms
saprobial:
Feed on dead organisms and organic wastes
5 classes of fungi – impact on humans
Ex. penicillin anti-biotic, cyclosporine from soil fungus helps suppress immune system to keep pts from rejecting transplanted organ; found in soy sauce, strong cheeses
Ex. Synchytrium endobioticum, (potato wart) deforms potatotes, so they can’t be sold 🡪 PEI affected in 2007.
Ex. found in food mould.
- truffles, they break down material in bone and wood, can be parasites (e.g. damage trees)
- can overgrow on lawns, parasites of plants that can damage crops,
