ANIMAL KINGDOM Flashcards
Characteristics of animals
They are eukaryotic, multicellular organisms with no cell walls.
They are heterotrophs that take in their food and then digest it.
They can move around.
They reproduce sexually through production of an embryo that develops into an adult.
Characteristics used to classify animals (know terms- radial symmetry, bilateral symmetry, coelom, sessil, external & internal fertilization etc)
radial symmetry - a body plan that can be divided along any plane, through a central axis, into roughly equal halves.
bilateral symmetry - a body plan that can be divided along one plane, through the central axis, into equal halves.
coelom - a fluid-filled body cavity that provides space for development and suspension of organs and organ systems.
sessil - they are stationary animals that do not move and live attached to one place.
external fertilization - occurs when gametes combine outside the body to form a zygote.
internal fertilization - occurs when the egg and sperm combine inside the female body to form a zygote.
