Q

What is the spitzenkorper?

A

apical body
organelle complex within hyphal tips which is predominated by secretory vesicles
provides wall building vesicles for hyphal tip extension

Q

What are the 3 methods of fungal cell growth?

A
  1. extension of cell at one end
  2. extension of cell across entire cell
  3. new wall made inside of old one which disrupts old one

Q

The fusion of hyphae between genetically identical or compatible fungi is a key feature of filamentous fungi. What are its benefits?

A
  • allows colony to act as co-operative unit and single individual
  • nutrient transport*
  • water translocation*
  • communication*
  • sexual reproduction

*- can occur across whole colony

Q

How are fungal compartments formed?

A
  • spindle pole body (= centrosome)
  • incomplete cleavage
  • septum formation from existing cell wall into the cytoplasm, leaving a pore
  • forms a compartment, not a new cell
