Fungi Flashcards
1
Q
What are the characteristics of fungi?
A
eukaryotic
cell walls containing chitin
heterotrophic
spores produced by sexual and/or asexual reproduction
2
Q
What is the spitzenkorper?
A
apical body
organelle complex within hyphal tips which is predominated by secretory vesicles
provides wall building vesicles for hyphal tip extension
3
Q
What are the 3 methods of fungal cell growth?
A
- extension of cell at one end
- extension of cell across entire cell
- new wall made inside of old one which disrupts old one
4
Q
The fusion of hyphae between genetically identical or compatible fungi is a key feature of filamentous fungi. What are its benefits?
A
- allows colony to act as co-operative unit and single individual
- nutrient transport*
- water translocation*
- communication*
- sexual reproduction
*- can occur across whole colony
5
Q
How are fungal compartments formed?
A
- spindle pole body (= centrosome)
- incomplete cleavage
- septum formation from existing cell wall into the cytoplasm, leaving a pore
- forms a compartment, not a new cell
