what are the features in the history of fungal skin infection?
history of scaly, itchy skin in affected areas
may be erythematous, flat or slightly raised annular patches of varying sizes
management?
advise on self care management strategies (Wear loose fitting clothes and good hygiene)
topical antifungal cream e.g miconazole
corticosteroid cream
if extensive/ severe in adult, can consider oral antifungal e.g terbinafine
what is onychomycosis?
fungal infections of the nail
due to dermatophytes yeast or mould
clinical features of onychomycosis?
scalling under neath
white/yellow streaks on nail
pitting/flaky white patches
yellow spots
flaking of nail
destruction of nail
how are nail infections treated?
asymptomatic = no treatment needed
diagnois should be confirmed by microbiology before treatment
dermatophyte infection = oral terbinafine
candida - anti fungals e.g amorolfine
if topical treatment is given, continue for 6 months for fingernails and 9-12 months for toenails
