What are the Muslim funeral rites? (6)
- Shahadah is recited when a persons dying

Why is the Shahadah recited?
To show the strength of a persons faith.
Why is the body washed and wrapped in white cloth?
The white cloth has often been worn on the Hajj. It is a sign of dignity and respect for the person showing every Muslim is equal in death.
Why are bodies buried facing Makkah?
It is the Holy city where Muhammed is believed to have been born.
Why is there no cremation?
There will be a physical resurrection on the Day of Judgment so Allah would not be able to put their bodies back together.
Why is the Surah read?
It helps people remember Allah is merciful and will judge us after death.
Why are simple gravestones used?
People should remember Allah and pray for the deceased remembering they are no longer on Earth.
Why is the mounting period short?
Grief is normal but excesses show a lack of faith as they should trust that the persons soul is with Allah in the afterlife.

Why is the body anointed?
Symbolises cleansing of the mind and spirit.
Why are there biblical readings?
They usually remind people of heaven and Jesus’ promise of eternal life for all believers.
Why is there a eulogy?
This is when a family member or friend talks about a dead persons life to honour them.
Why are there prayers in a Christian funeral
Protestants often pray to give thanks to God for a parsons life. Carholics often pray to reduce the the time of purgatory for a soul.
Why are flowers given?
To comfort the relatives and represent the beauty of the life to come in heaven.
Why are candles lit?
To remind that Jesus is the light of the world and there is still hope in the face of death.
