Fundamentals of the Nervous System and Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Understand the basics of the nervous system.
1
Q
What are the functional characteristics of the AXON?
A
- conducting region
- generates nerve impulses
- transmits impulses along axolemma (neuron cell membrane) to axon terminal
- neurotransmitters release into extracellular space
- communicates w/ many diff. neurons at same time
- lacks rough ER, golgi apparatus
2
Q
What is the myelin sheath?
A
- segmented sheath around most long or large-diameter axons
- formed by Schwann cells (PNS)
- myelin: whitish, lipid protein
3
Q
What are myelin sheath gaps?
A
- gaps b/w adjacent Schwann cells
- sites where axon collaterals can emerge
- “nodes of Ranvier”
4
Q
Describe myelin sheaths in the CNS.
A
- multiple, flat processes of oligodendrocytes, not whole cells
- can wrap up to 60 axons at once
- myelin sheath gap present
- thinnest fibers are unmyelinated
5
Q
What are multipolar neurons?
A
- 3 or more processes
- 1 axon, others dendrites
- most common, major neuron in CNS
6
Q
What are bipolar neurons?
A
- 2 processes
- 1 axon + 1 dendrite
- rare
7
Q
What are unipolar neurons?
A
- 1 process
- extends from cell
- forms central, peripheral processes
- together >> axon
8
Q
What are the functional classifications of neurons?
A
- sensory
- motor
- interneurons
*
- interneurons
