Q

OXIDATION?

A

THE CHEMICAL COMBINATION OF A SUBSTANCE WITH OXYGEN. ALL PETRO PRODUCTS ARE SUBJECT TO OXIDATION, WITH RESULTANT DEGRADATION OF THEIR COMPOSITION AND PERFORMANCE. THE PROCESS IS ACCELERATED BY HEAT, LIGHT, METAL CATALYST, WATER ACIDS, OR SOLID CONTAMINANTS.

OXIDATION CAN BE MINIMIZED BY GOOD MAINT OF OIL AND EQUIP TO PREVENT CONTAMINATION AND EXCESSIVE HEAT.

Q

WHAT IS PUMP-ABILITY?

A

THE ABILITY OF AN OIL OR GREASE TO FLOW UNDER ACTUAL OPERATING TEMPERATURES. ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT IN LONG LINE GREASE SYSTEMS AND OIL CIRCULATION SYSTEMS, OR UNDER COLD OPERATING TEMPS.

Q

WHAT IS A INHIBITOR?

A

USUALLY AN ADDITIVE USED IN OILS & GREASES TO ENHANCE THE LUBRICANTS ABILITY TO PERFORM UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS.

EXAMPLE: AN OXIDATION INHIBITOR HELPS INCREASE THE USEFUL LIFE OF AN OIL BY MINIMIZING THE HARMFUL REACTION OF OXYGEN IN THE AIR WITH OIL MOLECULES.

14
Q

DETERGENTS?

A

AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF ENGINE OILS THAT HELPS CONTROL VARNISH, RING ZONE DEPOSITS, AND RUST BY KEEPING INSOLUBLE PARTICLES IN SUSPENSION AND IN SOME CASES, BY NEUTRALIZING ACIDS.

16
Q

WHAT IS VISCOSITY?

A

MEASUREMENT OF A FLUIDS ABILITY TO FLOW

17
Q

TBN?

A

TOTAL BASE NUMBER-

OILS ABILITY TO NEUTRALIZE ACIDS AND ULTIMATELY EXTEND OIL LIFE.

18
Q

DEMULSIBILITY?

A

A MEASURE OF THE ABILITY OF AN OIL TO SEPARATE FROM WATER.

19
Q

SHEAR STABILITY?

A

USUALLY USED AS THE MEASURE OF PERFORMANCE OF VI IMPORVERS IN MULTI-VISCOSITY ENGINE AND GEAR OILS. VI IMPROVERS ARE USUALLY POLYMER ADDITIVES WHICH CAN SHEAR INTO SMALLER MOLECULES IF THE ADDITIVE IS NOT SHEAR STABLE. THE SHEARING WILL REDUCE THE HIGH TEMP OF VISCOSITY OF THE OIL.

EXAMPLE: 10W-40 COULD SHEAR TO A 10W-30 IN A SERVICE IF THE VI IMPROVER WAS NOT STABLE UNDER STRESSFUL OPERATING CONDITIONS.

20
Q

EMULSIBILITY?

A

THE DEGREE TO WHICH AN OIL FORMS AN EMULSION TO WATER.

21
Q

LUBRICITY?

A

THE ABILITY OF AN OIL OR GREASE TO LUBRICATE. ALSO CALLED FILM STRENGTH. LUBRICITY CAN BE ENHANCED BY ADDITIVES.

22
Q

WHAT IS EP (EXTREME PRESSURE)?

A

AN ADDITIVE WHICH FORMS PROTECTIVE FILMS ON A METALIC BEARING SURFACE TO HELP PREVENT METAL ON METAL CONTACT IF THE OIL FILM RUPTURES.

THESE ADDITIVES ARE USUALLY PHOSPHORUS, SULFUR, OR CHLORINE COMPOUNDS WHICH BONDS OR REACTS CHEMICALLY WITH THE METALS AT OPERATING TEMPS.

23
Q

POUR POINT?

A

THE LOWEST TEMP AT WHICH AN OIL WILL FLOW UNDER PRESCRIBED CONDITIONS.

24
Q

WHAT IS TAN?

A

TOTAL ACID NUMBER

25
Q

DISPERSANT (ADDITIVE)?

A

AN ENGINE OIL ADDITIVE THAT HELPS PREVENT SLUDGE, VARNISH, AND OTHER ENGINE DEPOSITS BY KEEPING PARTICLES SUSPENDED.

26
Q

WHAT DOES SUS STAND FOR?

A

SAYBOLT UNIVERSAL SECONDS.
