Injection into the muscle
Intramuscular (IM)
Injection that is into the tissue just below the dermis of the skin
Subcutaneous (sub-Q)
Injection into the dermis, just under the epidermis
Intradermal (ID)
Where are the only places on a syringe that can be handled?
Barrel
Flat tip of plunger
Contain single doses in liquid ranging from 1-10ml, constructed in a glass form with a constricted neck that snaps off
Ampules
Single or multi dose are available, contains a rubber seal, may contain dry or liquid forms of medications, air must be injected into them to permit easy withdrawal
Vials
What gauge needle is used for intradermal injections (TB skin test)
25-27 gauge
What length should the needle be for intradermal injections
3/8-5/8 inch
How is the site for ID injections selected
3 fingers below the antecubital space and above one hand width around the wrist
What angle should an ID injection be given?
5-15 degrees
