fundamentals in pathology Flashcards
which white cell is associated with acute infection on histology?
neutrophil infilitration
what is associated with chronic infection/lymphomas on histology?
lymhocytes/ plasma cells
marker of acute on chronic disease on histology?
neutrophils and lymphocytes (both acute and chronic)
what are eosinophils associated with?
allergyic reactions (drugs asthma)
parasitic infections (schistosomysis)
tumour e.g. hodgkins disease/ myleoproliferative disease as a reaction to neoplastic process.
child rectal biopsy eosinophils? maybe cows milk allergy
what is this
feline contractions/ eosionphilic oesophagitis, food allergy (asthma of the esophageous
urticarial itchy reaction, what cells is involved?
mast cells in epidermis
what white cell is associated with :
late acute inflammation
chronic inflammation (granulomas)
macrophages
form granulomas : organised collection of activated macrophages, epitheliod macrophages
attempt to wall off foreign organisms
liver with pale abnormal lobular material
granuloma: TB / sarcoid
TB: ziehl nelson stain AFB (RED) also will stain leprosey /other mycobacteria
squamous carcinomas features
keratin production
intercellular bridges
not all produced keratin (oepshageous anus cervix, skin ,headneck, vagina)
thin parralel lines between cells in stratified squamous epithelium
disorganised whirls of keratin in middle.
adenocarcinomas features
mucin production (alcian blue mucin stain)
glands
(lung breat stomach colon pancreas)
what does malignant melanoma look like biopsy
fontana stain for melanin
types of stain
histochemical staining
chemical reaction between stain and component of tissue (changes colour
e.g. prussian blue iron stain positive
glomerulus pink stuff –> congo red stain positive AMYLOID
can also be polarised (light) to show apple green birefringence
and immunohistochemical stain
immunofluorescence
immunoperoxidase
what tumour is this?
first stain with cytokeratin epithethial carcinoma
CD45 reacts with all lymphocytes lymphoid marker
what do all epithelial cells stain positive for
cytokeratins
different ones eg.
ck20+ ck7-
stain for herpes simplex
cells with multiple nuclei, on histopathology , non specific for herpes
immunohistochemical stain
HSV-1 antibody strongly
can identify specific specific infectious agents
