Fundamental of Computer Networks Flashcards
PAN/Personal Area Network
- Bluetooth data transfer
- Physically close devices(around one person)
- Phone -> Wireless headphones
LAN/Local Area Network
- Small geographical area(floor, classroom)
- Controlled by one person/organisation
- Connect to Internet
WAN/Wide Area Network
- Wide geographical area
- Internet is a WAN
- More people/organization manage it
Wired network
- Connected by fiver optics cable or cooper wires
- Faster connection
Wireless network
- Using radio waves
- No wires
Topology
- Way of which devices are wired together
- Star topology
- Bus topology
Star topology
More devices connected directly to the central device
Bus topology
Every device is connected to a central cable
Protocol
It’s an agreed way of communication
A.T.N.L.
Application Transport Network Link (Layers)
Application layer
Where the application operate
Transport layer
Takes the date and makes it in packets and transport it numbered so it can be reassembled
Network layer
Give the IP of the locations where to arrive and sent from on the packets
Link layer
Physically sent the packets the network
Authentication
Simply requiring users to provide credentials such as username and password
Encryption
Data that can be opened and then transformed into data that appear as meaningless
Firewall
Combine software and hardware to stop unauthorised access to the device
MAC/Media Access Control
It’s a security measure that decide who is and who isn’t allowed to connect to certain IP addresses
