Fundamental Movements Flashcards
movement
a change in relationship between body parts
motion
displacement of body or segment: translation or rotation
flexion
movement in the SAGITTAL plane, away from anatomical position
extension
movement in the SAGITTAL plane, back to anatomical position
abduction
movement in the FRONTAL plane, away from anatomical position
adduction
movement in the FRONTAL plane, back to anatomical position
horizontal abduction
movement away from the midline in the HORIZONTAL plane
horizontal adduction
movement towards the midline in the HORIZONTAL plane
lateral flexion
movement from midline in FRONTAL plane (occurs in neck & trunk)
internal rotation
reference point turns in, towards midline (TRANSVERSE plane)
external rotation
reference point turns out, away from midline (TRANSVERSE plane)
circumduction
not a pure movement but rather a combination of the basic four: flexion, extension, abduction, adduction
pronation
forearm movement, hand down (TRANSVERSE plane)
supination
forearm movement, hand up (TRANSVERSE plane)
pronation
foot movement, triplanar movement: eversion, horizontal abduction, & dorsiflexion (open chain)
supination
foot movement, triplanar movement: inversion, horizontal adduction, & plantarflexion (open chain)
thumb flex/ext
FRONTAL plane
thumb ab/add
SAGITTAL plane
opposition
thumb to pinky
inversion
foot movement, reference line is turned in (towards midline; FRONTAL plane)
eversion
foot movement, reference line is turned out (away from midline; FRONTAL plane)
ulnar deviation
wrist adduction
radial deviation
wrist abduction
ab/add
FRONTAL plane
int/ext rotation
TRANSVERSE plane
flex/ext
SAGITTAL plane
frontal/coronal
plane of the body
sagittal
plane of the body
transverse/mid horizontal
plane of the body
midcoronal plane
divides body into ant/post halves
midsagittal plane
divides body into right/left halves
midtransverse plane
divides body into sup/inf halves
anatomical position
palmar portion of hands face anterior
fundamental position
palmar portion of hands face medially
