Fundamental Laws Flashcards
Name three titles or achievements of Antoine Lavoisier
Geologist, Botanist, Biologist, Physicist, helped define the metric system, created an international language of chemistry, named hydrogen and oxygen, predicted the existence of silicon, outlined what elements were, figured out how animals extracted energy from food, determined elements could take different forms, published the very first chemistry book.
Give a brief history of Lavoisier’s life
Born into a wealthy family, inherited his mother’s fortune at age 6 when she died, was licensed to study law at his father’s wishes however chose to pursue science, married a wealthy girl when she was only 13, Mary-anne became his colleague and his wife, he disproved phlogiston an assumed element that was lost when things were burned, proved mass does not decrease if all matter is contained even when burned, combusted or oxidised, he was beheaded may 8th 1794 for his theories on chemistry, was pardoned of all charges a year and a half after his beheading
What did Joseph Proust add to Lavoisier’s discoveries?
A chemical compound always contains the same proportions of elements. Now called the law of Definite Proportions
What did John Dalton contribute to the early world of chemistry?
The first data supporting the ideas of atoms. However he believed atoms and molecules were the same thing.
What is Avogadro’s Law?
States that equal volumes of gases under the same conditions of temperature and pressure will contain equal numbers of molecules
