fundamental chemistry Flashcards
what does a nucleus contain?
protons and neutrons
what is an isotope?
atoms with the the same number of protons but a different no. of neutrons
how would istopes of an element be described
having same chemical properties, and similar physical properties
how is the existence of isotopes proven?
Mass spectroscopy shows existence of isotopes and other relative abundances
what is an ion?
Ion is an atom or molecule with a net electronic charge due to the loss or gain of electrons
why are ions formed?
Form as it provides electronic stability by creating a full outer energy level
general trends in the formation of ions
Metals tend to lose electrons to form positive ions
Non-Metals tend to gain electrons to form negative ions
Transitions metals are variable in their charges
up to group 3, increasing in positive charge
after group 4, decreasing in negative charge
