Functions of the skeletal system and cartilage Flashcards
what are the 4 components of the skeletal system?
bones, cartilage, tendons, ligaments
what are the five major functions of the skeletal system?
- body support
- body movement
- organ protection
- mineral storage (calcium and phosphate)
- blood cell production (produced in bone marrow)
what are the 3 types of cartilage?
fibrocartilage, elastic cartilage, hyaline cartilage
what cartilage is more closely associated with bone?
hyaline cartilage
what are the 2 types of cartilage cells?
chondroblasts, chondrocytes
what is a lacuna?
a blank space that is found within the matrix
appositional growth
new chondrocytes and matrix at the periphery - growth in width
interstitial growth
chondrocytes within tissue divide and ad more matrix between cells - growth in length
what are ligaments?
bone to bone
what are tendons?
bone to muscle
what is a perichondrium?
protective connective tissue sheath that covers most cartilage
what is articular cartilage?
hyaline cartilage that covers ends of bones where joints are formed; no perichondrium, blood vessels, or nerves
