Functions of the family-Functionalism and New Right Flashcards
George Murdock
Four functions of the family:
- Provides a stable satisfaction of adult sex drive
- Reproduces the next generation
- Socialisation of the young
- Meet its members’ economic needs
Universal family structure-nuclear family most effective at fulfilling these functions
Talcott Parsons (functional fit theory)
Functional fit theory-functions of family will fit needs of society:
•Pre-industrial society-extended family was multifunctional unit
•Modern industrial society-nuclear family, became unit of consumption not production as roles of family taken over by specialised agencies
-man=instrumental leader
-woman=expressive leader
•Geographically mobile workforce-nuclear family better suited
•Socially mobile workforce-nuclear family, removes tension
Talcott Parsons (irreducible functions)
Primary socialisation of children-equip them with basic skills and teach key norms and values, begin to integrate into mainstream society
Stabilisation of adult personalities-family place where adults can relax, enables them to return to workplace refreshed and happy which helps economy
