Functional fit theory-functions of family will fit needs of society:
•Pre-industrial society-extended family was multifunctional unit
•Modern industrial society-nuclear family, became unit of consumption not production as roles of family taken over by specialised agencies
-man=instrumental leader
-woman=expressive leader
•Geographically mobile workforce-nuclear family better suited
•Socially mobile workforce-nuclear family, removes tension
