Functions of the endocrine system Flashcards
What are the functions of the endocrine system
Provides a chemical system of communication within the bloodstream
Pass messages through the body through hormones via endocrine system
Hormones - chemical messages
What are hormones released by
Glands within the endocrine system
What do hormones regulate
Many bodily functions
How does the endocrine system differ from the NS
Slower
More widespread and powerful
What is a gland
An organelle that release hormones
Name the hormone and function of the purity gland
Knows as the master gland
Secretes many different hormones (ACTH, vasopressin, luteinizing)that control the function of the other glands
Name the hormone and function of the pineal gland
Secretes the hormone melatonin which is involved in regulating the sleep-wake cycle
Name the hormone and function of anterior pituitary gland - female
the anterior pituitary gland secretes Luteinizing hormone (LH) & Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulate ovaries to produce oestrogen & progesterone which regulates the female menstrual cycle and creates female characteristics
Name the hormone and function of the adrenaline gland
Release adrenaline and noradrenaline which cause physiological changes involved in the fight or flight response
Name the hormone and function of anterior pituitary gland - male
the anterior pituitary gland secretes LH & FSH, which stimulate the testes to produce testosterone which is involved in creating male physical and possibly behavioural characteristics and sperm
Name the Hormone and function of thyroid gland
the thyroid gland produces thyroxine, which increases heart rate and metabolic rates
Name the hormone and function of the posterior pituitary gland
the posterior pituitary releases oxytocin, which stimulates the uterus to contract during labour and also plays a role in bonding
Name the hormone and function of the pancreas
the pancreas secretes insulin and glucagon, which help regulate blood sugar levels
Using an example of a gland and hormone, outline the function of the endocrine system. Do not use the adrenal gland/adrenaline as your example (4 marks)
the endocrine system helps to regulate the activity of cells and organs in the body
the endocrine system communicates chemical messages to the organs of the body the anterior pituitary gland secretes LH & FSH, which stimulate the testes to produce testosterone & sperm
Explain the function of the endocrine system (4 marks)
The function of the endocrine system is regulate cell or organ activity within the body and control vital physiological processes in the body. Also it consists of several gland that release hormones/chemical messengers into the bloodstream which then bind with specific receptors in order to regulate the activity of cells or organs in the body. For example the adrenal gland release adrenaline and noradrenaline causing psychological reaction to occur preparing the body for the ‘fight or flight’ response and the pineal gland produce melatonin that control the sleep/wake cycle. However an imbalance in hormones might lead to dysfunction for example, high levels of adrenaline can having negative physical consequences eg increase blood pressure and heart disease.
