Functions Of Organelles Flashcards
Nuclear envelope
Pores allow passage of large molecules such as mRNA and ribosomes
Nucleolus
Site of formation of rRNA
Nucleus (2)
- Contains DNA which provides a template for DNA replication.
- Chromosomes which direct protein synthesis because they are the site of transcription
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Transports proteins made at the ribosomes
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Associated with the synthesis and transport of lipids
Ribosomes
The site of translation of mRNA and assembly of amino acids to form proteins
Mitochondria
Produce ATP in aerobic respiration
Lysosomes (2)
- Digest worn out organelles and materials that have been taken into the cell (e.g. bacteria)
- Isolate potentially harmful enzymes from the rest of the cell
Golgi apparatus (4)
- Makes secretory enzymes packaged into vesicles
- Forms lysosomes
- Transports and stores lipids
- Produces glycoproteins for export form the cell
Centrioles
Organise the micro tubules that make the spindle
Chromatin
Condenses to form chromosomes (DNA)
Plasmodesmata
Strands of cytoplasm forming a network which pass through the pores (called pits) of cell walls
Chloroplasts
Enables photosynthesis so plants can convert light energy into chemical energy
What is the purpose of cristae in mitochondria?
To give a large surface area for the attachment of enzymes involved in respiration
What are cisternae?
Interconnected fluid-filled spaces between the flattened sacs in the ER
