Functions of Lipids Flashcards
Name the 7 functions of lipids
Energy Source and Storage, Protection, Oxidation, Membranes, Waterproofing, Insulation, Hormones
Why are lipids a good source and store of energy?
1g of fat provides 2x the energy of 1g carbohydrate. Lipids are stored in adipose cells in fat stores.
How do lipids perform protection?
They protect delicate internal organs like kidneys from physical damage.
What is the function of lipids in oxidation?
Oxidation of triglycerides produces metabolic water (v. useful for desert animals).
What is the function of lipids in membranes?
Phospholipids are important components of all biological membranes.
What is the function of lipids in waterproofing?
(Waxes and oils) e.g. leaves have a waxy cuticle to reduce water loss.
What is the function of lipids in insulation?
Fats are poor conductors of heat (they retain body heat). They also provide electrical insulation around long nerve cells (e.g. Myelin Sheath around neurons).
What is the function of lipids in hormones?
Some hormones are lipids.
