Functions of Different Tissues Flashcards
Define the term Tissue
A group of specialised cells that are similar in structure and function
Define the term Organ
A group of tissues in a living organism that have been adapted to perform s specific function
Types of tissues
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscle- smooth, cardiac & skeletal
- Nerve
Functions of Epithelial Tissue
Made of layers of cells that cover the surfaces of the body that come into contact with the exterior world, line internal cavities and form glands
Main functions: protection, secretion, absorption and filtration.
Functions of Connective Tissue
Binds the cells and organs of the body together
Provides protection, support, and integration of the body
They support and connect other tissues; from the connective tissue sheath that surrounds muscle cells to the tendons that attach muscles to bones, and to the skeleton that supports the positions of the body.
Defend the body from microorganisms that enter the body. Transport of fluid, nutrients, waste, and chemical messengers is ensured by specialized fluid connective tissues, such as blood and lymph
Adipose cells store surplus energy in the form of fat and contribute to the thermal insulation of the body.
Name the 3 types of muscle tissue
a) Cardiac
b) Skeletal
c) Smooth
What is Skeletal tissue?
Voluntary type of muscle tissue, that is used in the contraction of skeletal parts. Maintain posture, cause movement, resist gravity, keeps the body upright and balanced through small adjustments.
Maintain homeostasis through generating heat. Through the breakdown of ATP
Protects internal organs e.g abdominal and pelvic organs.
Keeps joints stable, preventing skeletal structure damage and deformation.

What is Smooth tissue?
Involuntary type of muscle tissue
Found in walls of internal organs, blood vessels, in the eye such as the iris and skin where it can cause the hairs to become erect.
Doesn’t have any striations hence called smooth

What is Cardiac tissue?
Involuntary type of muscle tissue
Striated
Different from skeletal muscle as it shorter muscle fibres, has one nucleus in the centre region of the cell, branched extensively and are connected to each other at their ends by intercalated discs (which allow cardiac muscle cells to contract in a wave-like pattern).
Found in the walls of the heart
Name the functions of Nerve Tissue
Composed of neurons (responsible for communication through electrical signals) and glial cells (are supporting cells, maintaining the environment around the neurons).
It receives stimuli and transmits information through electrical impulses from one region of the body to another.
They are long and string like
