Functions of Cells Flashcards
Nucleus
The nucleus contains DNA which is genetic material, and it is the most obvious organelle in the eukaryotic cell. It controls all cell activity. Main Office
Nucleolus
The nucleolus is inside the nucleus. It also produces ribosomes.
Lysosome
The Lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes that are needed for intracellular digestion. Maintenance
Cell Membrane
The Cell Membrane is a protective barrier to the uncontrolled flow of water. Shipping and Receiving
Centrosome
The Centrosome is the area where microtubules are produced. The Centrosome is made up of a pair of smaller organelles called centrioles.
Cytoplasm
The Cytoplasm is the liquid (mostly water) in which all other cell organelles are located. Factory Floor
Vacuole
The vacuole stores nutrients and waste. Warehouse
Golgi
The Golgi make and transport macromolecules before they move somewhere else the cell. Finishing and packaging
Mitochondrion
The Mitochondrion provides all the energy for the cell to carry out all of its functions. Power plants
Ribosomes
The Ribosomes are packets of RNA and protein. Ribosomes create protein. Employees
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
The Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum appears “pebbled”, due to the many ribosomes on its surface. Assembly Line
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
The Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum appears smooth, due to no ribosomes on its surface. It creates lipids and steroid hormones. Assembly Line
Peroxisomes
The Peroxisomes protect the cell from its production of toxic hydrogen peroxide. The hydrogen peroxide is broken down into water and oxygen by oxidative enzymes, which are located inside peroxisomes.
Microtubules
The Microtubules are a part of the cytoskeleton. Microtubules also transport different substances throughout the cell.
Centriole
The Centriole is made up of a ring of nine groups of fused microtubules which are part of the cytoskeleton.
